By signing up for Wolves Lottery, Wolves supporters will also be giving their backing to a worthwhile local charity which supports thousands of people living with sight loss.
To be in with the chance of winning £1,000 whilst supporting Beacon Centre, sign up to play the Wolves Lottery here.
One in five people will be affected by sight loss, and Beacon Centre supports people who are struggling because they have lost their independence and lack the confidence to engage with a world they can’t see.
It offers technology training, activity sessions, health and wellbeing programmes, employment support, a talking newspaper and social care.
Around 193,000 people are living with sight loss across the West Midlands and around half of sight loss could be prevented.
With National Eye Health Week running until Friday 26th September, here’s Beacon’s Top Tips for looking after your eyes.
Tip one: Eat your greens
Eating a balanced diet is healthy for your whole body, but did you know dark leafy green’s that are high in antioxidants, such as Kale and spinach, can help prevent retinal damage? Other foods that are good for your eyes include oily fish like salmon and tuna and bright coloured veg such as carrots and orange peppers.
Tip Two: Wear your Sunglasses
Protecting your eyes from the sun is as important as using sun cream. Whether lying on a sunny beach or driving on a bright winter morning, you should be wearing your sunglasses. You should never look directly at the sun and no matter how stylish your favourite pair of sunnies are, you should make sure that they have the CE mark which ensures that they are giving you the right level of ultraviolet protection.
Tip Three: Check your eyes
Eye tests are not only about checking to see if you need glasses or contact lenses. An optician will check your overall eye health and can also detect other health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
Tip Four: Limit alcohol and stop smoking!
Drinking too much alcohol can lead to serious health conditions which can lead to issues with your sight. Smoking is the second biggest risk factor for developing macular degeneration and can increase your risk of developing cataracts. So do yourself a favour and stub out the cigarette!
